Abstract

Around 100 cases of heavy metal poisoning heave been reported by Special Health Examination in a year, which were mostly lead and chromium poisoning.
Lead poisoning cluster has been reported several times at a litharge making industry in 1983 and a battery manufacturing industry in 1986. A welder who had worked in the underground tunnel for soldering telecommunication cables died of chronic renal failure caused by lead poisoning in 1990. More than 20 cases of mercury poisoning have been found at a fluorescence lamp industry and a thermometer manufacturing industry in 1988. A 15 years old boy died of acute renal failure caused by mercury poisoning in two months after working at a thermometer manufacturing industry in 1988. A worker who had worked a zinc smelting industry died of renal failure in 1988. The case was claimed for the compensation as a cadmium poisoning but rejected because of inconsistent results of cadmium contents in renal tissues. Several claims for cadmium poisoning from smelting, welding and PVC stabilizer making industries were followed. The claims were rejected, however they were finally accepted as a work-related disease by the court. Since 1988, nasal septal perforation caused by chromium mist was found from platers in plating industries. Several cases of lung cancer were reported from welders exposed to chromium fume and painters exposed to chromium pigment. Parkinson syndrome was found from welders who had been exposed to high level of manganese during welding in shipbuilding industries.
The article will review various cases to give an idea about the present status of heavy metal poisonings in Korea.
